Chapter 248: It's Indeed Him
"Did you transfer 140 thousand dollars to me?" When she finally asked the question, Adeline's heart raced, and she was nervously awaiting Harrison's answer.
Harrison fell silent suddenly.
"What's wrong? Wasn't it you?" Adeline asked anxiously.
After a moment, Harrison finally spoke again.
He asked quietly, "You only just found out?"
Adeline was surprised and awkwardly admitted, "I just found out. I had always thought it was from Joyce."
Harrison snorted, but his voice seemed to carry a hint of pride.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier that it was you who transferred the money?" Adeline asked.,
"Shouldn't you have guessed right away?"
Harrison asked.
"How could I guess if you didn't tell me?"
"I knew you needed the money. Do you think I'd iust ignore that? Is that how you see me?"
After transferring the money to Adeline, he had eagerly waited for her gratitude.
More accurately, he had been waiting for her praise.
But Adeline showed no reaction at all and remained indifferent, which upset Harrison.
"The thing is, at the time, you told me that advancing wages wasn't company policy. I thought you were angry and was just trying to find a way to make up for it. Plus, you always gave off this... well, this rather cold vibe. And I'm your subordinate. What if you thought I was trying to borrow money with ulterior motives?"
Harrison thought Adeline was making excuses.
But on reflection, her reasoning seemed somewhat reasonable.
Looking back on how he had treated Adeline, he wanted to punch himself.
"Well, I know now," Adeline said gently. "I did appreciate that 140 thousand dollars at that time."
Harrison said, "It's nothing."
If Adeline really needed the money, Harrison would give it to her, whether it was 1.4 billion dollars or just 140,000 dollars.
He had indeed thought about transferring more money to Adeline.
But he was afraid she might misunderstand his intentions, so he only sent her the amount she needed.
"I'll pay you back after the year-end bonus comes through," Adeline added.
Harrison grew a little displeased. "Why should you pay me back? Do you think we need to be this formal?"
His comment suddenly made Adeline blush, and even through the phone, they both sensed the intimacy.
Adeline's heart raced, and after a long pause, she still couldn't find the right words to say.
On the other end, Harrison also remained silent.
All they could hear was each other's breathing.
After a while, Adeline finally found her voice,
"Well... Anyway, I still can't just accept your money without paying you back. It's not a small amount."
It might be a small amount to Harrison, but it wasn't to her.
Harrison didn't respond, so Adeline continued,"I'll repay you after the year-end bonus comes through. The company's doing well this year, so my bonus should be substantial."
Harrison was still somewhat reluctant.
But he ultimately conceded and said, "Alright."
After all, once they were together, everything he had would be hers, let alone the 140 thousand dollars.
He didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable.
"What do you want for lunch?" Harrison asked.
"If you're not going out, I'll order food for you: Consider it my treat."
"Why the sudden offer to treat us?" Adeline asked with a smile. "I still haven't treated you to the meal I promised."
"Miss Monroe is your friend. Since she's sick and I can't visit, I should at least do something else to show my appreciation," Harrison said.
Adeline couldn't stop smiling.
She intended to decline, but Harrison's serious tone made her unable to refuse.
"Joyce is still sick, so let's keep it light."
"Alright, I'll order light dishes for you."
"Okay."
As the topic ended, both knew it was time to hang up. But neither wanted to.
They ended up finding some other small talk before finally hanging up.
As soon as Adeline hung up, Joyce got out of the bedroom.
"Aren't you supposed to be resting?" Adeline said with a knowing look.
"I was just trying to give you and Mr. Thomson some private conversation space," Joyce said with a smirk. "Did you have a nice chat with Mr. Thomson?"
"Yes, would you be even happier if you knew he's treating us to lunch today?"
"He's treating us to lunch?" Joyce exclaimed.
"Today?"
"Don't worry. He knows you're sick and can't go out, so he'll order food for us," Adeline said.
Joyce sighed in relief and said, "Mr. Thomson is thoughtful. By the way, did you ask him if that 140 thousand dollars was from him?"
"I asked, and it was indeed from him," Adeline said.
"I knew it."
"I told him l'd pay him back after the year-end bonus."
"I guessed you would," Joyce said with a smirk.
"With your personality, you wouldn't want to take that 140 thousand dollars for free, especially since you're not married yet."
Adeline was taken aback and thought, "Marry?"
Honestly, that word seemed far off, and she
hadn't dared to think about it.
Just thinking about marrying Harrison made her mind go blank, and she couldn't imagine what it would be like if it happened.
Around eleven in the morning, Jamarion was already seated in the private room of the restaurant.
His appointment with Harrison was at noon.
Since it was his invitation, Jamarion came early to show his sincerity.
At this moment, he frowned and glanced at his phone from time to time.
Finally, the door to the private room was pushed open.
It was Callan who walked in.
Jamarion sighed in relief.
When he asked Callan to come along, Callan seemed reluctant, but at least he showed up.
However, Callan's eyes were bloodshot, and his hair was a bit disheveled, looking as if he had been through a hangover.
Jamarion asked helplessly, "Did you drink all night?"
Callan didn't answer. He just pulled out a chair, sat down, leaned back, and closed his eyes.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Joyce's guarded and hateful gaze.
He couldn't forget almost hurting her, and he felt too guilty to fall asleep.
So Callan resorted to alcohol to numb himself.
He knew that Joyce would never accept him after what happened yesterday.
Though he had thought it was better to have her body than not to have her at all, he regretted it once he was calm.
