Chapter 238: What Did 1 Do Wrong?

Ronan was already agitated, but he forced himself to calm down and listen to Milania.

Milania initially wanted to deceive him, claiming she had been falsely accused by Harrison.

But Ashton was present, so she couldn't say such things in front of him.

Milania repeated the excuse she had used earlier.

"Ronan, I know you like Adeline," Milania said.

"But I can't let the two of you be together, so I..."

"Why?" Ronan asked in disbelief. "Mom, didn't you like Miss Hensley? You even said you hoped she could be with me."

"That's what I used to think," Milania replied with a bitter smile. "But then I realized Harrison cares much for Miss Hensley. Can you compete with Harrison? Do you stand a chance?"

Ronan was speechless.

He quickly replied, "Why can't I? If I love her, I will work hard to get her. Is that wrong? Even if I fail in the end, I won't regret it."

"But have you considered the consequences if you fail?" Milania said, "Right now, Harrison is in control of the Thomson Group. If you go against him and offend him, what would he do to you? Even your grandfather values Harrison more than you."

Ashton frowned, clearly displeased with her words.

Ronan said, "Mom, what are you talking about? What would Harrison do to me? You're overthinking this."

"You're so naïve..." Milania sighed. "I know you're unwilling to give up, so I had no choice but to target Miss Hensley. I'm sorry, Ronan. I miscalculated this time."

Ronan looked at her in disappointment.

He suddenly realized he didn't know his mother at all.

And he wasn't even sure if the things Milania had just told him were true.

Ronan thought, "What is her real motive?"

"That's enough, Ronan, go back to your  room," Ashton said, his face serious. "Your mother and I still have things to discuss. Isaline, take him back."

Ashton rarely showed this expression.

Even Ronan was a little afraid, not to mention Isaline.

She had no choice but to wheel Ronan back to his room.

"Mr. Ronan, don't be upset." Isaline tried to comfort him. "Miss Hensley is fine now, and after tonight, Ms. Barrera won't dare try anything against her again."

Ronan, however, shook his head.

He had a vague feeling that things wouldn't end so easily.

Ashton and Milania returned to their bedroom.

As soon as the door closed, Ashton asked, "Was it you who ordered the arson at the hotel?"

Milania froze, then bitterly asked, "You don't believe me?"

"After everything that's happened, how am I

supposed to believe you?"

"Then why didn't you just tell them to kick me out of the Thomson family?"

Ashton struggled to control his emotions. 

"You know I can't do that."

"If that's the case, then you should trust me," Milania said. "We've been married for over twenty years. Do you think I'm that kind of person?"

"I don't want to doubt you," Ashton said painfully:

But once certain things started to unravel, details he had previously ignored began to magnify.

No matter how hard he tried, Ashton couldn't ignore them anymore.

Milania forced a smile and said, "As long as you trust me, we can get through this together. I'm sorry for what happened to Miss Hensley, but I wasn't behind the arson. Once Harrison finds the real culprit, I'll be cleared of all suspicion."

"You want the Thomson Group, don't you?" Ashton suddenly asked.

Milania looked at him in shock. "What are you talking about? How could you say something like that?"

"I just remembered how you used to tell me to fight for a position in the Thomson Group instead of managing a small subsidiary," 

Ashton said. "At the time, I thought it was just casual conversation, but now I see your ambition is much bigger than that."

Milania's eyelid twitched slightly.

After a moment, she suddenly laughed.

"So what if I want the Thomson Group? What's wrong with that? You and Harrison are both part of the Thomson family, so why does he get to manage such a huge corporation while you're left with a small subsidiary? Lorenzo is biased. I'm dissatisfied with that!"

Ashton's eyes flickered with a hint of sorrow.

"You're wrong. Dad treats us the fairest," he said, choking back tears. "You just don't understand him."

Lorenzo had given him a chance.

However, Ashton didn't have the ability to manage such a large corporation.

His capabilities were far inferior to Harrison's.

That was why Lorenzo entrusted the Thomson Group to Harrison.

He couldn't let such a large corporation crumble just because Ashton was his son.

Ashton was different from Harrison, who was able and could manage the company with ease, not to mention that he was strong and healthy.

But as for Ashton? If he were forced to take on the Thomson Group, he'd have to push himself to the limit.

Ashton had only recently regained his health. If he were overworked, he wouldn't live long.

Milania didn't seem to have considered any of this.

"Yes, I know what you're trying to say. You lack the ability, that you're not as good as Harrison, and therefore you're not worthy of competing with him. But isn't that your fault?

You're the one without talent, and because of that, your wife and child have to suffer because of you. Why don't you reflect on that?"

As she spoke, Milania's face became slightly distorted.

Ashton said softly. "Do you still remember that when you first got together with me, you said you loved me for who I am, not for my money or status?"

Milania was momentarily stunned and thought, " That was over twenty years ago. 

How could he still remember that?"

"Before we got married, you knew that I didn't have what it takes to run an entire corporation," Ashton said sadly. "You said that even if I were just an ordinary worker, you'd still want to be with me. Have you forgotten your own words?"

Milania hadn't forgotten.

But back then, she had only said those things to deceive Ashton.

Ashton was her only way into the Thomson family.

If she hadn't said those things, she couldn't have convinced him to marry her.

She knew Ashton wasn't capable enough, but she had still held onto a sliver of hope, thinking she'd marry into the Thomson family first and figure things out later.
