Chapter 174: The One He Likes
Harrison sat down next to Sam, casting a cold glance at him.
Sam, unfazed, leaned closer to Harrison while Daphne and Adeline were busy discussing what to eat. In a low voice, he said, "I'm helping you out here. You should be thanking me, but you gave me a hard look. It's too much."
"I haven't even started with you yet," Harrison replied. "Who told you to share my business with Daphne?"
"Hey, I didn't say anything! I swear I didn't." Sam quickly defended himself. "I only mentioned that there was a secretary around you. And she figured out the rest on her own. You know she's always been sharp, and she reads romance novels all the time. She's sensitive to this sort of thing."
Harrison rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on.
"Besides," Sam continued, "even if she knows, so what? What are you so afraid of?"
Harrison watched as Daphne leaned in close to whisper something to Adeline, making her laugh uncontrollably. Sighing, he said, "I'm
afraid she might say something reckless in front of Ms. Hensley."
"Relax, Daphne isn't that kind of person."
Daphne, looking at the menu, said excitedly, "I've missed the food here so much! I've been craving these dishes for ages. Just looking at the menu, l feel like I want to order everything."
"How about we ask the restaurant to cook the whole menu for you?" Sam joked.
"Oh, I wish! But with just the four of us, it'd be too much, and it'd be such a waste." Daphne waved her hand dismissively.
"Wastefulness is shameful. I'll take it slow. Ms. Hensley, how about this black pepper beef?"
"Sounds good." Adeline nodded. "I actually like beef."
"We have the same taste! I love beef too. Let's get this dish, and how about adding some spicy beef as well?"
Sam raised an eyebrow and asked, "You two hit it off, huh?"
"Absolutely! I liked Ms. Hensley the moment I saw her. Plus, Harrison is my good friend. If he likes someone, that person is definitely my friend too."
As soon as Daphne finished speaking, an awkward silence filled the room.
It was only then that Daphne realized the gravity of her words and wished she could bite her tongue off.
Sam rubbed his forehead with a bitter smile.
He had just confidently told Harrison that Daphne was a sensible person.
And yet, here she was, proving him wrong in an instant.
He turned to glance at Harrison.
Thankfully, Harrison didn't seem angry. His expression remained calm.
However, Sam noticed that Harrison's fingers, resting on his lap, were slightly curled.
Sam thought, "Is he nervous?"
Sam couldn't help but look over at Adeline.
Her expression was also calm, just like Harrison's.
Sam couldn't help but think how well-matched they were.
Even in a situation like this, they could keep a straight face.
But deep down, their emotions were probably in turmoil.
Daphne quickly tried to cover up her mistake, saying, "I think I might have had too much to drink and started talking nonsense. Please don't mind me."
But she had just arrived. How could she have had too much to drink?
"You're always like this, Daphne. We'll have to share a few more drinks later," Sam chimed in, trying to ease the tension.
Adeline smiled lightly, but in her heart, Daphne's words had stirred up a storm.
Though she had already suspected that Harrison might like her, hearing it so directly from someone else was still unsettling.
She couldn't help but recall Myra's words from that day on the phone. "I know he might like you now, but do you think this feeling will last a lifetime? There's no way you'll ever truly be together.”
Adeline lowered her eyes.
She wanted to ignore those words.
But Myra's voice kept echoing in her mind.
"Ms. Hensley?" Daphne's concerned voice snapped her back to reality. "Are you alright?"
Daphne was feeling both worried and guilty at this moment.
She could sense that something was off with Adeline.
Daphne thought, "Is it because of what I have just said? Blame it on my big mouth."
Adeline snapped out of it and quickly shook her head. "I'm fine, really."
Seeing Daphne's worried expression, she forced a smile and said, "It was just a joke. Don't worry about it."
When he heard that, Harrison's gaze dimmed slightly.
