Chapter 120: Hoping she’s fine
Lauren's eyes were slightly red as she said, "Ms. Hensley, last time, when I was bullied by that man and my clothes were disheveled, only you covered me with a coat...."
Lauren had understood that dignity was nothing to her since she entered this profession.
No one would take a disheveled bargirl seriously.
But Adeline covered her with a coat.
Whether it was a simple gesture or not, this action was deeply engraved in Lauren's heart.
Lauren really liked Harrison, and she knew Harrison felt differently about Adeline.
But she couldn't bring herself to harbor any hostility towards Adeline.
She truly hoped Adeline would be safe and sound.
Adeline let out a sigh.
She didn't know what to say and gently patted Lauren's hand.
Lauren wiped her eyes with a tissue,
smiling and saying, "It's fine, I entered this line of work for money. These are the things I should endure."
Lauren didn't want to dwell on such a heavy topic anymore, so she brought up something else herself.
As long as she could convey those men's words to Adeline and make Adeline cautious, it would be enough.
After dinner, Adeline bid farewell to Lauren.
When she returned home, Adeline received a call from an unknown number.
She just answered it when she heard Mateo's frantic voice.
"Adeline, do you really have no intention of helping me?" Mateo asked.
Adeline's expression turned cold.
She had blocked Mateo's number, but he called from a new one.
Mateo was truly persistent.
"Stop calling," Adeline said coldly. "If you call again, I'll change my number."
Changing her number would be troublesome for her work.
But she had to get rid of Mateo.
"You heartless child, I'm your father!" Mateo yelled, "You must send me 600 thousand dollars now!"
"Are you gambling again?" Adeline asked sharply, "What the hell is wrong with you?"
"So what if I am? If you send me 600 thousand dollars, I can definitely turn things around. By then, we'll all live like kings!"
Mateo declared arrogantly.
Adeline felt a throbbing headache.
He was utterly foolish!
"I won't give it to you," Adeline said coldly.
"You should know how much debt I paid off for you before. I've already repaid your so-called favor of raising me!"
Perhaps sensing Adeline's resolute tone, Mateo panicked.
"Good girl, I know l've troubled you these days. Can you do me one last favor? After this, I'll definitely quit gambling! I've already racked up tens of thousands of dollars in debt. If you don't send me money, they'll chop off my hands!"
Mateo pleaded.
Unfortunately, Adeline had become immune to such pleas.
"Every time in the past, you said it was the last time," Adeline said coldly. "But time and time again, you gambled, and then I had to bail you out."
"I swear, this time is definitely the last..."
"Do you think your promises mean anything?"
Adeline interrupted him, "Let me tell you, this time, I won't help you. Deal with your debts yourself. Or, just let them chop off your hands. It's better than you repeatedly gambling."
"You! How can you be so heartless...”
"It's because I wasn't heartless enough that I ended up like this. But from now on, whether you live or die has nothing to do with me," Adeline said.
With that, Adeline hung up the phone and immediately blocked the number.
She put down her phone and walked expressionlessly into the bathroom to splash her face with cold water.
Mateo was her father. How could she feel easy by saying such harsh words?
But she had made up her mind.
If she continued to indulge Mateo, give him money, and allow him to gamble, her life would be ruined along with his.
She would never allow that to happen.
After paying off Joyce's debt, she would leave this city and stay away for a while.
It would be best to leave the past behind.
On her birthday, Millie stood anxiously outside a KTV.
The trap for Adeline had been set.
They were just waiting for her to walk into it.
But, could it be that Adeline wouldn't come?
Millie thought, "Why hasn't Adeline shown up yet?"
Glancing at the time, Millie couldn't resist calling Adeline.
Adeline answered promptly. "Hello?"
"Where are you?" Millie asked, restraining her impatience. "My friends are all here, just waiting for you."
"Oh, I'm stuck in traffic." Adeline's voice sounded hurried.
And Millie could hear car horns in the background.
"How could there be traffic?" Millie asked.
"I heard there's road construction ahead, and now there's a traffic jam behind. I don't think I can find another route," Adeline explained.
Millie stamped her foot in frustration and said, "What should we do?"
Adeline said, "From the looks of it, l'll need more than forty minutes to get out of this road. You guys go ahead and have fun. Don't wait for me. It'll take me another half an hour to get to the KTV after I'm out of this road."
"You're not backing out, are you?" Millie asked cautiously.
"Of course not." Adeline chuckled and said,
"Since I promised to come, I won't go back on my word."
"That's good. If you don't come on my birthday, I'll really be upset."
After hanging up the phone, Millie felt agitated.
She would have to wait for another hour before she could torture Adeline.
But it seemed like Adeline was indeed on her
way here.
Anyway, Adeline couldn't escape.
Millie's mood lifted at the thought of it.
Since Adeline still had over an hour to arrive, there was no need for Millie to continue waiting outside. She returned to the KTV private room.
The room was quite spacious, with seven or eight men beside her.
"Is she here yet?" one man asked eagerly.
"Not yet!" Millie pursed her lips and said, "I just called her, and she's stuck in traffic. Probably more than an hour away."
"Damn it, why traffic at this time!" Another man was impatient.
Another man wasn't in a rush, just smirking,
"Well, good things are worth the wait."
"Still over an hour to go. It's really hard to bear.
How about we have a taste of that thing ourselves? Have a little fun in advance," one of the men said.
After he spoke, the others became restless.
Millie listened nervously and excitedly.
"Yeah, why not give it a try? Even a little taste will do!"
"Look at you guys, so impatient!" one man laughed and scolded.
Then, he took out a bottle from his pocket.
"Let me tell you, this is some good stuff.
Before he could finish, there was suddenly a commotion at the door.
Then, the door of the private room was forcefully pushed open.
