Chapter 123: Clear Boundaries
"What should we do? Our girl might end up in jail this time!" Janiyah cried, "You need to handle this."
"What can I do?" Mateo asked frantically, grabbing his hair.
"Can't you ask Adeline for help? She's Mr.
Thomson's secretary. Maybe she could talk to Mr. Thomson, and he might be able to get our girl out!"
Just the mention of Adeline made Mateo furious and apprehensive.
"Don't bring her up again. Do you think she'll help us? You must be out of your mind," Mateo snapped."I just had a run-in with her! That heartless woman... I should have known better from the start..."
"What's the point of saying all this now?" Janiyah interrupted, "Saving our girl should be the priority! Mateo, do you think you can fool Millie forever? You're not his stepfather, but her real father!"
Mateo fell silent, and Janiyah sobbed even harder. "Back then, I was with you even if I was called a mistress and worked hard for years to raise our daughter. But now I finally marry you, our daughter might end up in jail. You can't even think of a solution..."
"I don't want to see our daughter in prison. I'm at a loss! I don't even know how to repay those debts!" Mateo yelled, pulling at his hair.
"I don't care. If you're heartless, Millie and I would just die!"
With that, Janiyah hung up the phone.
Mateo, already in a state of agitation, received another call urging him to pay his debts.
He didn't even dare to pick up and hastily ended the call.
Soon, a barrage of insulting and threatening messages flooded his phone.
Mateo grew increasingly scared as he imagined himself losing his limbs.
He thought another gamble might help him recover, but now he didn't even have the money to gamble with.
Mateo hesitated for a moment before finding a contact.
If it weren't for being at his wits' end, he wouldn't even consider contacting this person.
After leaving the ward, Adeline intended to go to the doctor's office to inquire further about Lacey's condition.
But just as she walked a few steps, she suddenly spotted two familiar figures ahead.
They were Harrison and Eleanor.
Eleanor seemed like she had just been discharged, wearing a mask and sunglasses.
She stood face to face with Harrison, seemingly chatting, while a few people beside them were busy packing up things from the ward.
Whatever Eleanor said made Harrison smile.
Adeline lowered her gaze slightly.
She didn't want to disrupt them, so she was about to turn and leave when Eleanor noticed her.
"Is that Ms. Hensley?" Eleanor called out to her.
With her call, Harrison also turned to look.
When he saw Adeline, his eyes widened.
Adeline couldn't just walk away and only greet them. "Mr. Thomson, Ms. Fraser."
Eleanor walked up to Adeline and asked with concern, "Ms. Hensley, are you here at the hospital because you're sick?"
"No," Adeline replied calmly. "Just some personal matters."
"I see... Ms. Hensley, you've been by Harrison's side for so many years and working hard. If you encounter any difficulties, you must tell both of us," Eleanor said.
Adeline understood.
Eleanor had made it clear that she and Harrison were on the same side.
Adeline smiled faintly and said, "Thank you, Ms. Fraser."
Eleanor blinked, surprised by Adeline's casual reaction.
She hadn't expected Adeline to respond like this and even thank her.
It made Eleanor feel annoyed.
Harrison walked up beside Eleanor.
"Time to go," he said.
"Okay."
Eleanor nodded and then said to Adeline, "To celebrate my discharge, Harrison and I are going out to eat. Would you like to join us?"
Before Adeline could respond, Harrison interjected, "Ms. Hensley has her own matters to attend to. No need to invite her."
As he spoke, there was a hint of impatience on his face.
"Harrison, you sound so cold," Eleanor scolded.
Adeline said mildly, "Mr. Thomson, Ms.
Fraser, take care."
Harrison looked at her coldly and then left.
Eleanor followed closely behind him, and Adeline heard her ask, "Harrison, where should we go for dinner?"
By then, Adeline didn't care about their conversation anymore.
She slightly relaxed her focus and continued towards the doctor's office.
After leaving the hospital and getting into the car, Eleanor looked down at her phone for a moment, then handed it over to Harrison.
"Harrison, how about this restaurant...
But she noticed Harrison gazing out of the window, lost in thought.
Eleanor thought, "What is he thinking about?
Amber, or Adeline?"
Eleanor gritted her teeth inwardly.
She forced a smile, tugging at Harrison's sleeve.
"Harrison, how about we go to this restaurant? The reviews are good, and they have private dining rooms, so we won't be bothered by paparazzi."
Harrison snapped out of his reverie and said flatly, "It's up to you."
The driver started the car, and Eleanor enthusiastically chatted about the restaurant's menu, but Harrison remained uninterested.
Eleanor's eyes darkened.
She asked, "Harrison, you just ran into Ms.
Hensley accidentally. Does it warrant this level of distraction?"
Harrison glanced at her.
"What's it to you?" he asked.
Eleanor took a deep breath.
"Don't forget what you promised me," Eleanor said.
"You wanted me to pick you up from the hospital, I did. You wanted me to accompany you for dinner, I did. Any more questions?" Harrison asked.
Eleanor's heart pricked with pain.
She knew very well that if it weren't for that clue, Harrison wouldn't have come to pick her up personally today.
Eleanor pretended to be sick in the hospital for days, hoping to garner some pity from him.
But the reality proved that it was just her foolish fantasy.
If it weren't for her conditions being within Harrison's acceptance, he probably wouldn't have cared about that tiny clue of hers.
"And one more thing," Harrison said again.
"Stay away from Ms.Hensley. Don't let me catch you near her or say any useless words to her."
"What, are you afraid she'll get jealous?" Eleanor mocked with a smile, "You're mistaken. Did you not see Adeline's reaction just now? She doesn't care at all."
Harrison remained expressionless, but there was a clear sense of displeasure emanating from him.
"She doesn't care about our relationship, which means she doesn't have any feelings for you..." Eleanor scoffed. "So, in her presence, no matter what I say, it won't stir any emotions in her."
