Chapter 122: Have You Forgotten?
Mateo was about to leave with Adeline when suddenly he realized something, crossed his legs, and said, "No, I'm not going out. I need to talk to you right here."
That shameless face of his made one feel like giving him a good beating.
Bianca and Oliver both looked at Adeline with pleading eyes.
Adeline gave a cold smile, pulled up a chair opposite Mateo, and said, "Alright, let's talk here."
Thinking Adeline was starting to compromise, Mateo smirked with a hint of satisfaction.
He was about to speak when his phone rang.
Cursing under his breath, he answered impatiently, "What is it? Can't you see it's not a good time calling?"
Whatever was said on the other end made Mateo's expression change instantly, and he asked anxiously, "What's going on? How did she get arrested? What did she do?"
Hearing this, Adeline knew that the caller was Janiyah, who must have known about Millie's arrest.
Mateo's expression grew increasingly grim, and he shouted, "Crying won't help! How could you know nothing? How am I supposed to fix this if you're clueless?"
Adeline watched him anxiously expressionlessly.
She thought she had no expectations left for Mateo.
But at this moment, she still felt a clear pang of sadness.
Mateo cared for a stepdaughter who had no blood ties with him.
But he only exploited his own daughter.
He even wanted to sacrifice her for his own good.
Why was that?
She couldn't think of anything she had done
wrong to Mateo since childhood. In fact, she had always wanted to be a filial daughter, study hard, and make her father's life
better.
But Mateo seemed never to have cared for her.
The times he supposedly cared for her when she was sick was just that he was drunk and sleeping soundly.
After feeling sad for a while, Adeline put away her sympathy for Mateo.
Forget it, it didn't matter anymore.
She hadn't planned to continue considering
Mateo her father anyway.
After Mateo hung up the phone, he looked at Adeline with a sinister gaze.
Mateo asked, "Did you have anything to do with your sister's arrest?"
"Me?" Adeline sneered, "From childhood to now, it's always been her causing trouble for me. If she's in jail now, it's because of her own malicious intentions. She brought it upon herself “
"You!"
Mateo raised his hand to hit her, and Oliver quickly rushed over, grabbing his arm.
"Are you trying to start a fight in my mom's ward?" Bianca scolded, "If you dare to do that, even if my mom disagrees, I'll call security to kick you out!"
Seeing Oliver holding his arm, Mateo hesitated.
Oliver wasn't particularly strong, but he was still a young man.
"What are you two doing? I wasn't planning to hit anyone!" Mateo shouted, "How dare you both be so heartless to your uncle!"
After saying that, he shook off Oliver's hand and turned to Adeline again, saying.
"Whether you're involved in this or not, you need to figure out a way to get your sister out!"
"Sister? I only have cousins, and they are here.
Which sister are you talking about?" Adeline asked sarcastically.
Bianca straightened up as soon as she heard that.
"Isn't Millie your sister? You grew up together..."
"Enough!" Adeline couldn't bear to hear anymore.
"From childhood to now, how she and her mother have made things difficult for me? I don't believe you didn't know! And..."
She clenched her fists furiously.
"Have you already forgotten what happened before?" Adeline shouted.
As soon as the past was brought up, Mateo became somewhat uneasy.
But being shameless as he was, Mateo said,
"What happened before was our fault, but we re family. Why do you hold grudges like this?"
Not only Adeline, but even Bianca and Oliver were stunned by his shamelessness.
Adeline smiled and said, "Sorry, I'm just that kind of person. I'll be direct with you. I won't meddle in Millie's affairs. And I warn you, if you dare to harass me again or ask me for money, I'll sue you."
"How dare you!" Mateo roared in anger. "I'm your father! It's your duty to give me money?"
"Children have an obligation to support their parents, but first, you're not at retirement age. Nor have you lost your ability to work.
Second, the money I gave you before should be enough to cover many years of support," Adeline sneered.
Seeing Mateo's face gradually pale, Adeline continued, "I know quite a few lawyers. If you want to sue me, you can try."
Mateo couldn't help but tremble.
He was just a coward. He was good at being unreasonable with his family, but once it got serious, he wouldn't dare to do anything.
"Oh, and I need to remind you. Gambling is illegal. Once it goes to court, you know the consequences," Adeline said.
Hearing this, Mateo became even more frightened.
"I... I don't believe you dare..."
"You try it, and you'll find out!" Adeline said sternly, "From today onwards, if you dare to harass me or anyone close to me, I'll immediately contact a lawyer to sue you!"
Mateo was now trembling with fear. He cursed at Adeline and then hurriedly got up and left.
Adeline breathed a sigh of relief. She turned around to see Bianca and Oliver, who were looking at her with admiration.
"You're quite something!" Bianca exclaimed.
"How come I didn't notice before that you have this much courage?"
After all, Adeline used to bicker with her over trivial matters.
"There's no other way to deal with someone like him but to play tough," Adeline said helplessly.
Adeline had never imagined that one day she would have to deal with her own father this way.
But Mateo was too shameless, and she had no choice.
"Dear, I'm sorry you had to go through this,"
Lacey said, reaching out to Adeline with concern.
Adeline went to her bedside and held her hand, saying, "Lacey, I'm used to it, and I'm fine now. But as for you, you can't keep indulging him. He knows full well that you're sick, yet he still comes to your ward to cause trouble. That shows he doesn't care about you at all, so why should you care about him?"
Tears welled up in Lacey's eyes. Adeline was right.
Lacey had always been worried because Mateo was her relative.
But Mateo didn't consider her feelings at all...
"I understand," Lacey wiped away her tears and said, "From now on, if he dares to come here and cause trouble again, I'll have someone kick him out."
Mateo fled from the hospital.
Janiyah's call came in again..
