Chapter 108: He Forgets What He Said
Adeline recalled the events of the previous night.
If anyone was in trouble, it was her.
"It's nothing," Adeline said, checking the time. "He should be here soon."
"Oh, that's good." Amber seemed relieved. "I thought so, since he was fine at dinner last night, chatting happily with Ms. Fraser."
After saying this, she watched Adeline's reaction.
But Adeline showed no reaction at all.
She even quickly reviewed the document and pointed out several mistakes.
Amber was stunned.
"These need to be corrected," Adeline said.
"Bring it back to me after you've made the changes."
When Amber didn't respond, Adeline glanced at her and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I'll go make the corrections," Amber replied.
Back at her desk, Amber was filled with confusion over Adeline's reaction.
Hearing that Eleanor was with Harrison last night, Adeline seemed to be fine.
Amber thought, "Could it be that Adeline doesn't have feelings for Harrison at all?"
Amber was full of doubts. She looked at the document again but had already forgotten what mistakes Adeline had pointed out.
She hadn't been paying attention when Adeline explained.
Amber had no choice but to ask her colleagues for help.
Luckily, she had always been friendly, so her colleagues were willing to assist her.
One of these colleagues, after helping Amber, told Adeline about the incident.
Not out of spite, but because Amber was Adeline's trainee, and it seemed right for Adeline to know.
Adeline didn't say much about it.
But she did realize something.
Amber had deliberately mentioned
Harrison and Eleanor in front of her.
Was Amber trying to provoke her?
Adeline's eyes darkened.
She thought, "Who sent this woman?"
Her first suspicion was Kaylie.
After all, it was Kaylie who had drugged Harrison that night.
It wasn't impossible for her to try something else.
But something felt off.
How would Kaylie know such intimate details about Harrison?
Even if Kaylie was Myra's chosen daughter-in-law, Myra wouldn't share her son's secrets so freely.
Adeline rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on.
Just then, she heard footsteps.
She looked up.
It was Harrison coming back to the office.
He was wearing the clothes she had prepared for him that morning, and they fit perfectly.
Harrison walked to her desk and said coolly, "Ms. Hensley, come to my office."
"Yes, Mr. Thomson."
Adeline stood up and followed Harrison into his office.
Once inside, Harrison didn't sit at his desk but on the sofa, and he said, "Sit down."
Adeline stiffened and said, "!'!! just stand."
Harrison didn't insist.
They fell into an awkward silence.
After a long pause, they both spoke at once,
"Last night...”
They both hesitated, then said simultaneously, "You go first."
Adeline's temples throbbed. This time she didn't wait for Harrison and asked, "What did you want to say?"
Harrison coughed lightly and said,"I drank too much last night and ended up at your place, causing you trouble. I'm sorry for that."
"It's fine," Adeline said.
If it had just been about taking care of a drunk man, it wouldn't have been a big deal.
But last night...
When she remembered that passionate kiss, Adeline's heart raced.
She was grateful she could maintain her composure.
Harrison was watching her closely.
Though her expression was normal, he felt she must be thinking something.
After a moment, he asked cautiously, "Did I do anything inappropriate last night?"
Adeline was silent.
It was very inappropriate.
But why was Harrison asking this?
Did he have some memories of last night?
After a short pause, Adeline said,
"Not really. You just talked a lot. Mr. Thomson, do you remember what you said?"
Harrison kept a straight face.
"No, what did I say?"
His heartbeat began to quicken.
Had he confessed to Adeline while drunk?
That would be so embarrassing.
It was his first confession, yet he made it when he was drunk, and he didn't even remember it!
Seeing he seemed genuinely clueless, Adeline breathed a sigh of relief and said, "You just kept telling me to work hard and that I might get a bigger bonus at the end of the year."
Harrison was confused.
So, when he got drunk, he just talked about work?
He didn't believe it.
Seeing Harrison's skeptical look, Adeline realized she might have overdone it.
What she said was far from what Harrison had actually said.
"It's true," Adeline said earnestly. "After all, I'm your secretary. Isn't it normal for you to want me to work hard?”
Harrison would have to be crazy to believe that.
"I didn't do anything at all?” Harrison asked, his gaze intense.
Adeline nearly faltered under his stare.
But she forced herself to nod, using the composure she had practiced over the years to hide her guilt.
Seeing her serious expression, Harrison felt relieved.
At least he hadn't done anything to make Adeline particularly upset.
"That's good. Regardless, I should thank you for last night," Harrison said.
But as he said this, he remembered seeing her with Russell.
He hesitated but couldn't help asking, "Who were you with after work yesterday?"
"With my best friend," Adeline answered truthfully. "She invited me to a new restaurant."
Remembering Harrison mentioning Russell, she added, "We ran into Mr. Hunter at the restaurant. Afterward, I chatted with him for a bit before going home."
Adeline wasn't deliberately hiding
Russell's confession. She just felt it was a private matter and didn't want to broadcast Russell's feelings.
"You ran into him by chance?" Harrison asked.
"Yes, it was purely coincidental," Adeline said.
This truth eased Harrison's mind a bit.
"That's good," he said.
But those simple words stirred up a storm in Adeline's heart.
