Chapter 70: Sense of Crisis
During dinner, Lorenzo deliberately had Adeline sit next to Harrison.
Ronan kept signaling to him on the sly, but Lorenzo pretended not to notice.
"Ms. Hensley, don't be shy, just feel at home," Lorenzo smiled kindly. "You look so thin. You probably don't eat well usually, do you?"
"Thank you, Grandpa," Adeline replied. "Actually, I eat quite a lot normally."
"Grandpa, Ms. Hensley isn't easy to gain weight. I envy her," Ronan chimed in. "By the way, Ms. Hensley, this rib soup is my favorite. Let me serve you some!"
As soon as he said this, Harrison had already placed a steaming bowl of rib soup in front of Adeline.
Adeline was taken aback, then quickly said, "Thank you, Mr. Thomson."
Ronan rolled his eyes and picked a meatball, sticking it on his plate.
"Don't play with your food like that," Lorenzo scolded him.
Ronan had no choice but to reluctantly pop the meatball into his mouth.
"Ms. Hensley, how's your family doing lately? Everyone's fine, I hope?"
Adeline paused with her spoon.
She didn't want to mention her family.
But in front of Lorenzo, she couldn't say that. Just as she was about to say "They're fine,"
Harrison interrupted, "Grandpa, there's a project at work I'm unsure about. I wanted to seek your advice."
"Oh?" Lorenzo raised an eyebrow.
"It's rare for you to have something you're unsure about. I'll take a look at it later."
Harrison smiled and picked some ribs for Adeline.
Adeline quietly thanked him, feeling a warm sensation in her heart.
Harrison was trying to help her out.
Adeline didn't expect that he could be quite considerate sometimes.
After dinner, Lorenzo wanted to discuss work with Harrison in the study.
Adeline was about to excuse herself when she heard Myra say, "Ms. Hensley, it's still early- Would you like a chat with me?"
"Mom." Harrison frowned.
"What's wrong? I can't chat with Ms. Hensley? Are you afraid I'll do something to her?" Myra's expression turned cold.
Just as Harrison was about to say
something, Adeline smiled and said, "Ma'am, where shall we chat?"
If she declined, Myra would only think she was being arrogant.
Myra glanced at Adeline and said, "Come with me."
Adeline followed Myra out, and Ronan whispered, "Brother, don't worry. I've got this."
With that, he stealthily followed behind the two.
In the study, Lorenzo was already seated at his desk, waiting for Harrison.
Seeing Harrison's furrowed brow, Lorenzo chuckled and asked, "Did your mom pull Adeline away?"
"Yeah."
"Your mom doesn't like Ms. Hensley, huh?" Lorenzo sighed. "Ms.Hensley is a good lady. It's just that she wasn't born into a wealthy family, and your mom can't let go of the window dressing."
In the past, Harrison would have immediately retorted if Lorenzo had said something like this, questioning why her background mattered for a secretary.
But now, he found himself considering that if it were someone he liked, he wouldn't care about their background.
As for Myra, despite being his mother, she couldn't dictate his feelings or marriage.
"Harrison, even if you try to act tough, I can see that Ms. Hensley is special to you,"
Lorenzo said seriously. "Let me give you a piece of advice. A lady like Ms. Hensley must have many suitors. If you don't seize the opportunity, you'll regret it."
Lorenzo's words immediately brought Russell to Harrison's mind.
As a man, Harrison could sense that Russell's feelings for Adeline were not simple.
And Ronan was always trying to get close to Adeline.
Ronan was good at charming girls, and Adeline seemed patient with him because he was Harrison's brother, but if this went on...
Harrison felt a hint of unease.
Lorenzo saw his expression and chuckled knowingly.
"So, feeling the pressure now?" Harrison quickly composed himself.
"Grandpa, you're just kidding."
"Alright, I'm just kidding if that' s what you want to believe," Lorenzo said nonchalantly.
"What's this project you're unsure about?"
Harrison casually mentioned a project.
After he finished, Lorenzo almost rolled his eyes.
"You could've handled it like child's play five years ago. Now you're telling me you're unsure about how to deal with it?" Lorenzo raised his eyebrows. "Are you playing me?"
Then he quickly realized what happened. "You deliberately changed the topic during dinner, didn't you?"
Harrison explained, "Her family situation is quite complicated. From now on, it's best not to ask her about it."
"I see." Lorenzo nodded knowingly. "Alright, I understand."
While Harrison and Lorenzo discussed in the study, Myra was sitting with Adeline in the backyard.
The aroma of coffee wafted through the air as Myra poured a cup of coffee for Adeline.
"This is my favorite coffee. Please try it," Myra said.
Adeline lifted the cup and took a sip.
"How is it?" Myra asked.
Adeline smiled and said, "I'm sorry, Ma'am, I'm not very good at tasting coffee. It feels like I'm wasting such good coffee."
She was being honest.
Compared to this high-end coffee, Adeline preferred things like milk or cola.
Several colleagues had remarked that based on Adeline's appearance, she didn't seem like someone who enjoyed milk or cola.
Myra smiled meaningfully and said, "You speak your mind."
"I always do."
"It seems the coffee in the Thomson family isn't quite to your liking," Myra remarked.
Adeline knew that it was just an analogy.
What Myra meant was that Harrison didn't fit for her.
"Yes," Adeline replied, "all of us should find something that suits us."
She wanted to make her stance clear to Myra.
Adeline didn't know why Harrison suddenly brought her to the Thomson family for dinner today.
But he wouldn't have any ulterior motives towards her.
Adeline simply wanted to work diligently until the end of the year.
And then she would disappear from Harrison's world.
"Is that so? Ms. Hensley, you talk a big game, but your actions may not always match your words."
Adeline said, "Ma'am, I apologize for the sudden visit today. It won't happen again in the future."
"What, are you implying that Harrison forced you to come here, and you didn't want to?"
Myra's expression turned colder.
Adeline hesitated.
Strictly speaking, that was true.
But if she said this in front of Myra, it would seem like she was trying to drive a wedge between Myra and her son.
