Chapter 47: Harrison's Sarcasm
Dawson was caught off guard.
When he regained his senses, a tall man had already shielded Adeline.
"Who are you?" Dawson asked harshly.
"You don't need to know who I am," the man replied. "You just need to know that if you bother this lady again, you will have a terrible end."
The man's tone was calm and steady.
Adeline found the voice somewhat familiar.
She tentatively asked, "Mr. Hunter?"
Russell Hunter slightly turned his head and nodded at her.
Adeline didn't expect it to be him.
Russell was the current CEO of the Hunter Group.
The Hunter family was currently the only entity that could compete with the Thomson family. There weren't many descendants in the Hunter family, and Russell was the only heir of his ger eration.
He was handsome, wealthy, and gentle, the dream lover of many young ladies.
Someone once anonymously posted a poll online asking, "If given the chance, would you choose Harrison or Russell?" and the votes for these two were unexpectedly tied.
Dawson didn't know Russell, but upon hearing Adeline's address to the man, he realized Russell's Identity was extraordinary.
Mainly because he figured he couldn't match Russell, Dawson could only grumble and leave.
"Are you alright?" Russell turned around, asking gently.
"I'm fine," Adeline smiled.
"Thank you, Mr. Hunter."
Adeline had encountered Russell a few times during business between the Thomson Group and the Hunter Group.
But those were all in work settings.
This was the first time they met privately.
Despite her smile, Adeline face was pale.
Russell fell silent fora moment and said, "Shall I get you a cup of hot water?"
Adeline instinctively shook her head.
Her mind wasn't calm yet, and she didn't want to be alone.
If this had happened before, she could have remained composed.
But ever since her encounter with Joshua, there had been a shadow lingering in her heart.
Just now, Dawson's attitude was just like Joshua's.
"Then I'll accompany you back to the reception hall," Russell said.
Adeline asked calmly, "Would that inconvenience you?"
"Not at all. I was planning to head back anyway. There's an item I really want to bid on," he said.
Adeline nodded and took a step, but her legs felt weak, and she almost stumbled. Fortunately, Russell caught her arm in time.
"Are you alright?" Russell asked in concern.
"Thank you, Mr. Hunter, I'm fine.”
Just as Adeline finished thanking him, she suddenly heard a cold voice, "Ms. Hensley."
Her body stiffened as she turned and saw Harrison standing nearby.
His gaze was cold.
Under the corridor's light his facial expression wasn't clear, but Adeline knew he was angry.
Adeline opened her mouth to say something, but no words came out.
Russell also noticed Harrison.
He nodded in greeting as usual. "Mr. Thomson."
"Mr. Hunter." Harrison coolly nodded. "We haven't met for long."
"It's been a few months," Russell replied.
Harrison ignored Russell and turned to Adeline, asking coldly, " Ms. Hensley, considering a job change?"
Adeline lowered her eyes and said, "I have no such intention."
She understood what Harrison mean so she turned to Russell and said, "Mr. Hunter, thank you for your help earlier. I'll leave first."
Russell smiled and said, "Alright."
Watching this scene, Harrison felt uncomfortable.
He didn't know what exactly Russell did for Adeline just now.
They looked quite intimate just now. Harrison thought, "Are they close?"
Harrison didn't suspect that Adeline wanted to change jobs, but he felt angry.
After Adeline left Russell, Harrison turned and walked away.
Adeline could only follow behind him.
Rüssell watched their retreating figures, frowning.
Harrison and Adeline walked back to the hall in silence.
Adeline could feel that Harrison was angry.
She wanted to explain what had just happened.
But he seemed unwilling to talk to her.
When they reached the the hall, Harrison suddenly stopped.
He said nonchalantly,”Ms. Hensley, you're indeed impressive. Tonight, you attracted so many men's attention. Even Russell was charmed by you."
Adeline held her breath.
She could only explain, "It's not what you think, we just...”
"Not what I think? You just happened to meet?" Harrison interrupted her, "Ms. HensIey am I blind?"
"Mr. Thomson, you're misunderstanding."
"With your ability to attract men's attention, no wonder Joshua would do that to you."
It felt like a bucket of cold water was poured over her head, and Adeline looked at Harrison in shock.
What did he mean by that? Was he implying that she intentionally seduced Joshua, so she deserved what happned to her?
"Mr. Thomson, are you serious about what you're saying?" Adeline asked, her face pale.
"Why wouldn't I be?" Harrison sneered, "Of course, Joshua is not a good man, and you probably don't like him. But if the man that night was Russell, maybe you would blame me for being meddlesome."
Adeline felt that her heart was squeezed tightly, making it hard for her to breathe.
How could Harrison say such things?
What happened that night was a lingering shadow for her, and he was the hero who could dispet that shadow. Whenever she thought that Harrison had saved her, Adeline wouldn't feel so bad.
But now, he said such cruel things.
Adeline smiled sadly and said, "Well, you're right. Mr. Hunter's qualities are unmatched by ordinary men."
With that, she turned and went back into the hall.
Harrison's eyes darkened, and his fingers tightened together.
Inside the hall, the auction was still ongoing.
At this moment, the auction was featuring a famous painting that had caught the interest of many attendees, who were bidding enthusiastically.
Carla said to Kaylie, "Didn't you want to pick a gift for your grandmother? She's still in the hospital. If she received this painting, she'd surel happy."
Carla finished speaking without waiting for Kaylie's reply. When she turned to look, Kaylie was lost in thought, her face ashen.
Carla quickly understood.
Harrison had just got the sapphire necklace.
After Harrison bid, Kaylie also tried to bid, but Harrison didn't give in. Every time she bid, he raised the price, leaving Kaylie with no dignity at all.
