Chapter 44: He Could Never Like Me
Adeline going out dressed like this?
No. Harrison wouldn't allow it.
Sam could tell from Harrison's expression what he was thinking.
Sam put away his phone and chuckled, "Bro, not to criticize, but I don't think you can dictate what someone else wears. Even if you become boyfriend and girlfriend in the future, or even spouses, you still have to respect her."
Harrison remained silent, looking sullen.
After a while, he realized something was wrong.
"How could l ever be her boyfriend?" he asked, his face tense.
Sam laughed, "You're just being stubborn. Alright, if you re not going to be her boyfriend, then you have no right to dictate.
She's just your secretary. As long as she dresses appropriately during working hours, that should be enough for you."
Sam's words annoyed Harrison, causing him to ignore Sam's earlier hypothetical scenario about Adeline dressing provocatively. His mind was now filled with images of her walking down the street dressed in revealing outfits.
At this moment, Adeline had reached Joyce's side.
"Joyce, why are you here too?" Adeline asked.
Joyce smiled and said, "Our magazine needs a dedicated report about this charity event. Our editor-in-chief managed to secure a spot and sent me over."
Joyce was an editor at a magazine and also worked as a photographer.
She had a camera in her hands at the moment.
The charity event was not private and allowed various media outlets to take photos and report on it.
"I see."
Adeline was delighted to encounter her best friend in this setting.
"Adeline, you look stunning today," Joyce exclaimed. "I've known you for so many years, and this is the first time l've seen you look this beautiful. This dress looks expensive. Oh, was it a gift from Mr. Thomson?"
"Yes." Adeline nodded. "I don't know why, but he asked me to accompany him to the event as his partner."
"He must want everyone to see that you're special to him," Joyce said.
Adeline was taken aback.
Then she denied this theory, saying, "That's not possible."
"Then why did he do this?" Joyce asked.
Adeline glanced at Harrison, who was chatting with Sam, and speculated,
"It's possibly because a media outlet spread rumors about us having an improper relationship, and he wants to show up with me in public to tell everyone that we're open and aboveboard."
Joyce found it strange. "It's not convincing. Why do you think that Mr. Thomson could never like you? You're wonderful, beautiful, and competent. You've been working for him for five years. It's believable that he has developed feelings for you over time."
Adeline smiled wryly, "It's precisely because I've been with him for five years that I know he wouldn't like me."
Adeline had seen clearly just how cold and indifferent Harrison could be over these five years.
She also knew what fate awaited any female employees who dared to make advances toward Harrison.
So, Adeline dared not entertain any romantic fantasies. She still needed this job.
Thinking about it, Adeline thought that the only person Harrison might show some compassion toward was Lauren.
After all, for Lauren, he had acquired the Clarke Group.
Perhaps there was another, his unattainable sweetheart.
Adeline had met Lauren, but she wondered what his sweetheart looked like.
"Well, I don't know much about him Since you put it that way, I won't argue," Joyce said. "Oh. With such a beautiful face like yours, if you could use it well, I bet you'd be successful by now."
"Joyce."
"Just kidding." Joyce smiled and said, "By the way, can I take photos of Mr. Thomson today?"
This charity event was public, as clearly indicated on the invitations.
Guests here were implicitly permitted to be photographed by the media.
But Joyce was a bit wary of Harrison, so she wanted to ask beforehand.
"You can take photos, but don't write anything inappropriate," Adeline said.
"Don't worry. Who would dare write anything inappropriate about Mr. Thomson? Except for that new media outlet. They're clueless."
Adeline, after all, was here accompanying Harrison, so she couldn't chat with Joyce for too long. After a few more words, she-said, "I'll go find Mr. Thomson now. Take care, and let me know if you need anything."
"Got it, go ahead."
Adeline turned and walked toward
Harrison.
Joyce watched her go and couldn't resist taking a few photos.
After taking the photos, she admired them on her camera.
Adeline looked so charming. Even her back view was beautiful.
Joyce thought, "She has such a great figure, fair skin...”
At that moment, Joyce suddenly noticed a woman in the photos glaring maliciously at Adeline's back.
She couldn't help but shudder.
Who was this woman?
Why was she looking at Adeline like that?
At this point, a peer from another magazine came over to chat with her, so Joyce asked, "Do you know who this woman is?"
Her peer glanced at the photo in the camera and said, "That's the Hickman family's heiress, Kaylie. Don't you know her?"
With that reminder, Joyce suddenly remembered. Indeed, she was the Hickman family's heiress. Joyce had seen her photos online before but had just forgotten momentarily.
Why was Kaylie glaring at Adeline? Did they have some sort of grudge?
Joyce was a bit worried and thought she should remind Adeline.
When Adeline returned to Harrison's side, a waiter had just delivered a brand-new shawl.
Harrison took it and handed it to Adeline.
"Mr. Thomson, what's this?" Adeline was puzzled.
"Put it on," Harrison said succinctly.
Adeline didn't quite understand but accepted it and draped it over her shoulders.
Seeing her back fully covered, Harrison's eyes flashed with a hint of satisfaction.
Sam smirked and said, "Ms. Hensley Harrison cares about you. He thinks it's too cold in the venue today, so he specifically found you a shawl to keep you warm.”
it was indeed a bit chilly today, but inside the venue, the heating was sufficient, and she wasn't cold.
However, she didn't dare voice this. She simply said, "Thank you, Mr. Thomson.”
"Did you hear that? Ms. Hensley thanked you," Sam teased Harrison.
Harrison ignored him.
The auction had not yet begun, and many people had come over to chat with Harrison.
Some he had only met once or didn't even remember who they were, so Adeline quietly reminded him.
Harrison had either met some people once or never met them at all, and he couldn't remember who they were. Adeline quietly reminded him in his ear of their identities.
