EPISODE 91
At this point, all Joey wanted to do was one out of two things: He either breaks down the wall between them and pounces on Jake throwing punches at him until he feels better. If Jake might have to become a vegetable in the process by losing consciousness and going into a coma or worse off even die in the process, then so be it, he doesn't deserve to be alive anyway, Joey was ready to go to prison and serve a life term. He either does that or just walks away from this whole place to anywhere that Jake won't be seen.
All he wanted to do was pick from both options but, he wasn't in a place where he could do what he wanted to. This was no longer just a fight between him and Jake. The goal wasn't just to have revenge anymore. It was way bigger than that now.
"We've talked about this for quite a while now. I think I think we should end it and retrace our steps and refocus our aim. I didn't come to talk about the past with you, I came here to talk about how we can move forward." Joey said.
"Why should I trust you? Why should I" believe anything you've said? Why are you even helping me?" Jake asked.
"I'm going to answer all of them, one, at a time." Joey began. "First, you should trust me because you have no other choice other than to do so. Trust me or not, it wouldn't change the fact that I'm the only one whom you can rely on now. And regards to believing what I've said, it's the same as what I mentioned earlier, you have no other choice. It doesn't matter if you want to or if you don't want to, it doesn't change the fact that you have to. I don't have anything to prove to you, because I'm not trying to convince you, I don't need you, you need me. And lastly, regards to what you said about me helping you, oh no no no, sorry. I'm not trying to help you, I'm actually doing this for myself. So don't even for a second ever think I'm doing this for you. Have I answered all your questions now?" Joey asked for s confirmation.
"Kind of!" Jake replied.
"When you get back talk with the prison guard and let them know you want a new lawyer," Joey instructed.
"Okay!" Jake replied.
Joey and Mandy stood up to take their leave. Just before opening the door, Jake called out to them. "I almost forgot, what do I say when I'm asked my reason for wanting to swap lawyers," Jake asked.
"You don't think you are being fairly represented legally," Mandy answered.
She walked outside and then she dragged Joey with her. She wasn't going to give Jake the opportunity to keep throwing annoyingly useless questions at him.
"Ouch! That hurts!" Joey exclaimed as he followed Mandy obediently.
Mandy didn't even pay attention to his cry, she couldn't care less. At that moment all she wanted to do was take Joey far away from the environment in which Jake also existed. He may not be saying it, but she could tell she wanted that too.
"Erm...excuse me! What's going on?" Joey asked Mandy who was seated at the driver's position.
"Get in!" Mandy commanded. " I would be your driver today!" She said wearing a smile.
Joey was reluctant in letting her drive at the instant. He wanted it, he secretly wished she would do so voluntarily after Jake said what he said about his late father, but he couldn't bring himself to ask her to consider her condition, he just couldn't. Right now watching her beg him to do what he had secretly prayed she would do was a very strong temptation that was quite difficult for him to refuse.
He was still adamant about letting her drive but seeing how she was, it was already quite obvious her mind was made up and she wasn't ready to budge anytime soon so he just get her.
"Fine! You can have your way." He said to her as he helped her with the door and moved over to the other side.
"Destination please?" She asked him as she jerked the car into motion.
"Wherever!" Joey exclaimed, sounding tired.
"Alright then! Destination wherever activated!" She said as she began her
trip on a merry-go-round.
The moment the car moved, Joey closed his eyes and he slept off. He really needed this. He needed some peace for him to properly process the entire conversation he had when Jake in regards to what occurred in the past.
Mandy increased the tone of the soft music that was playing. She sure knew how to comfort people. Teardrops rolled down Joey's cheeks.
She looked at Joey and she smiled when she saw the teat drops. It was a positive sign, he was going to feel good and better soon enough.
She fixed her gaze on the road and then she went around the neighborhood one more time before finally heading home.
It has been exactly six hours since Joey and Mandy returned from prison. And for six hours the words of Jake kept replaying on repeat in Joey's head like it was his favorite soundtrack.
Joey scoffed. He was just staring outside standing on his lawn. He turned his head, not necessarily to look for anyone or anything but just more like a reflex action.
Joey returned his eyes to what he had just seen to be sure that it wasn't his eyes playing mind games with him.
"Oh my goodness you scared me!" He exclaimed as he saw Mandy still staring at him with her eyes bulged out.
"Why in the world would you stare at someone that way with your eyes bulging the way they were!" Joey exclaimed sounding more like he made a statement than ask a question.
"Maintain that gaze and then stare at yourself at the window I'm sure even you would be afraid of you." He added.
Mandy still maintaining that gaze obeyed Joey and then she stared at herself in the window., "Ahhhhhhhh!" she exclaimed shocked by what she saw. She indeed looked scary making her fave that way. "I'm sorry!" She apologized., "I want to ask you this Joey, why exactly do you even want to help Jake out in any way. Yh I know you are actually only helping yourself but still, indirectly in a way you would still be helping out Jake. Getting him to seek for redress in court and coming out clean is only going to reduce his charges and automatically lessen his service term." Mandy said with a
confused look on her face.
One would be able to tell that she had been thinking about this for a while and was unable to find an answer.
The terrace was made in such a way that both rooms were closely linked.
Joey walked to the end of his terrace getting somewhat close to Mandy's. "I just can't stand injustice when I see one. Tiffany had done great evil and it was only right for her to receive the punishments for her actions and as for Jake... " He smirked and looked away. "He ain't coming out anytime soon. We have a thousand and one charges to keep in jail with. We would present them all to the court during the retrial." Joey said.
Mandy smiled as she rubbed over her stomach. It was only right for people to get what they truly deserve.
"Boss!!!" Mandy exclaimed as she gave Joey a teasing look. She was indeed impressed.
Joey felt good about himself too. They both remained there staring into the road. There were lots of beautiful sights for the eyes to behold.
Jake's words still played in his head despite that.
*********************
Mandy walked past Joey's study without stopping to say hi. She had hoped the door would be closed but typical Joey, he left the door open and Mandy was sure he did so on purpose.
"Wow! Early bird!" Joey exclaimed from behind Mandy jamming his hands together for her. It was obviously a mocking clap.
"Believe me l actually wanted to wake up early, I had all the alarms in the world on my bedside but none of them seemed capable enough to come to wake me. Trust me it's not me, l am usually a light sleeper, it's the baby she just won't wake up until she is ready to no matter what you do."
Joey had given Mandy a stern warning not to joke about her antenatal care. He had told her to always made sure she went early. Mandy met with the doctors at the hospital during the antenatal days and then she comes back home to her house doctor for the other days.
Joey's nagging was even worse than that of the doctors at the hospital. While Mandy looked at Joey with pleading eyes, he stared at her with an expressionless gaze, his arms folded. He wasn't going to budge.
"I would have to face my punishment wouldn't I?" Mandy said looking at the
man standing before her who wore no look of pity or mercy.
