EPISODE 79
Spring was gradually fading away, making way for the onset of winter weather. It was long overdue, after all, as everyone had grown tired of the long, hot spring. Something a little different wouldn't be so bad after all.
Mandy was nearing the end of her second trimester when I met her. She could feel the baby move around in her arms and legs.
"Hello, boss! Good morning!" Mandy greeted with a friendly smile on her face.
"Good morning, Mandy!" Joey returned the greeting with a smile on his face.
Although Joey's happiness was on the surface, it was evident that it was coming from deep within. It had been a tong time since he had been this genuinely happy. To be fair, perhaps ages was a bit of an exaggeration, but it has indeed been a long time.
Who wouldn't be in this situation? After everything that has happened in the last two months. Anyone who has survived such a harrowing series of events has earned the right to be this content.
"How's the baby doing?" Joey asked
"I think I'm doing okay!" Mandy responded by moving the sides of her lips down and bringing the brows of her eyes up in response. Making a sarcastic remark.
In the blink of an eye, Mandy's face was adorned with a dejected grin.
"Can you tell me what's wrong?" Joey inquired as soon as he became aware of the situation.
Mandy smiled once more, but it was a feeble smile, and then she responded.
"It's just the memories that are bothering me. It appeared in a flash of light." She stated she was trying to be real with her smile, but it just wasn't coming out at the moment.
Eventually, Joey came up to her and placed his hands on her shoulders. "It wasn't your fault that something happened. You were merely trying to make it through the day. What important is that you and your child are both still alive, as is your kid." He took another step closer.
"Mandy, the battle isn't over yet. It will only be a matter of years before they are made available to the public. We need to be even better prepared for when that time comes.
We've just just advanced to the next round. There will be a series of other rounds that will follow in the same vein." Joey attempted to make her feel better by saying something.
"Okay! I understand what you're saying!" Mandy shared her thoughts.
"Come on, let's get back to doing what we were doing," He Stated this while patting her shoulder.
***************
Jake banged his fist against the transparent plastic blind that divides the inmates from the visitors, expressing his displeasure with it. His lawyer had delivered the same response that he had been delivering for the previous one month.
"You have to get me out of here!" Jake screamed. "You must do all in your power to get me out of here. It doesn't matter how much money you have to spend! All I want is to get out of here as soon as possible!" He screamed even louder.
"Sir, l've tried my hardest. I tried everything I could to get you indicted and sentenced to four years in prison rather than the standard twelve years. And now I'm putting out my best effort to get it lowered to a year. That is the best I can do at this point. Anything more than that is out of the question for mel!" "It was said by the attorney." He was becoming increasingly irritated, and the only thing keeping him going was the money he was being compensated with. That was the only thing he could think of to soothe himself. His source of comfort and motivation.
"It doesn't matter to me! I need to get out of here in less than a year." Jake said it once more. "What about my wife, Tiffany, do you think? What about her? What do you think? Is there anything new? I'm referring to a positive response!" He inquired.
"She would be discharged in six months," says the doctor. "It was said by the attorney.
Jake leaned his chin against the desk.
Never in his entire life did he foresee himself being imprisoned or even spending a night in a cell, but now, right now, he is being requested to remain in the facility for a period of one year. "Oh, how I despise that night!" Jake let out a scream.
FAST FORWARD: one month ago
"Can you tell me where we're heading this time?" As they were getting inside the car, Mandy asked Peekaboo a question.
"South Korea," He answered in kind.
"South Korea!" Mandy let out a yell of surprise. "I'm talking about why that particular country out of all the others.
What exactly do we need to do there is not entirely clear." She inquired one more.
"I haven't received any specific instructions yet. The only thing I've been instructed is to drive us both there and that once we there, our mission assignment would be handed to us." Peekaboo,' Peekaboo remarked as he shifted his gaze between the road and Mandy while he was speaking.
"Joey!" Mandy burst out laughing. "He is constantly coming up with outlandish ideas.
I'm curious as to what our mission might be this time." She stated that she had her gaze fixed on the road. "Perhaps to have a little
friendly get-together with the South Korean authorities." She said, trying to make a joke as she laughed, and then turned to look at Peekaboo in the hopes that he would laugh with her as well.
Peekaboo kept a straight expression and didn't even crack a side smile, let alone make a sound of laughter, the entire time.
"You're not much fun!" Mandy explained that he didn't laugh with her when she folded her hands in frustration, and that she then concentrated on the travel.
They arrived at the airport and boarded the plane using their boarding card as proof of identification.
"Where are you going, ma'am?" "Where are you going, sir?" When they arrived at the airport, the receptionist asked them both the same question.
"We're at Incheon International Airport!"
Peekaboo shared his thoughts.
"All right, sir. You'd have to make your way over there then." She remarked this while pointing to the line of individuals who were headed in that direction.
"Thanks!" Following his successful identification of the location she was indicating with her eyes, Peekaboo shook the ticket in her face while wearing a smile on his own face. "Let's go!" says the group. He said something to Mandy.
