EPISODE 48
"So why is she there?" Joey asked.
"Huh!" Kai replied.
"What's with that sound? I know you heard me." Joey said.
"Erm... I haven't figured that out yet, but I think I overheard them talking about getting a contract signed or blind, I don't really know what it was they were discussing but l am perfectly sure l heard the word contract." Kai
explained.
"Contract! Hmm! I wonder what contract they could have been talking about. More importantly, what is the contract for?"
"I would try my best to get an Intel on all of this," Kai said grateful for the fact that Joey hasn't reprimanded her yet, for bringing half verified information.
The last time she did so, he warned her against repeating the act again. "I just don't know how long our hidden guest would be staying."
"You would have to do a stakeout today.
You would be pulling an all-nighter. I have a feeling she would be leaving very early in the morning. We need every information we can get. I don't know why, but I don't feel good about this, I don't." Joey said. "And, make sure you bring verified information to me next time, I want more of facts and less of your hunches." Joey hung up.
"What a relief!" Kai exclaimed as she could finally breathe properly. She had been seizing her breath getting ready for Joey's scolding. "He didn't react as much as I was expecting. I got scared for nothing." She said as she leaned on the wall.
"That was Kai I guess?" Mandy asked as she walked into the study.
"Yh, that was her," Joey replied. "I haven't seen you all day, is everything okay?" Joey asked with a look of concern.
Well, l would have preferred to say yes, but it's almost like rule number three is right in my face. So, I am left with no other choice than to tell you. I am not perfectly okay."
"What's wrong?" Joey asked dropping his phone on the table as he hurried towards where Mandy was. He held her by her hands and then he pulled her close to him. "Your temperature feels normal." He said as he moved the back of his palm over her forehead. "You seem fine." He said, this time his hand on her neck. "You don't seem to be lacking blood either." He said as he looked closely into her eyes.
Mandy just stared at him with happiness in her eyes. His worry and concern were strange to her, no one had been that way to her before. "I'm fine. I'm not sick. It is more of mental stress than a health issue." Mandy told him.
"And mental stress isn't harmful to your health huh!" Joey said getting agitated.
"What exactly is the issue?" He asked again.
"I've been doing a lot of thinking lately, and I really can't understand what use you have of me. I know both our nightmares are caused by the same person, we both want the same thing I get it, but I don't get how I could be helpful." Mandy said wearing a look that showed her insecurity. "I know this is not supposed to be an issue but it's a very serious one for me. I don't want to be an item that gets discarded along the way, I need to know my worth and my value. It may sound crazy but that's just how I feel." She added.
"Were you always this insecure?" Joey asked Mandy as he withdrew from her taking few steps away. "Do you really not value yourself. It's true that aside from we both having the same goal, there is another reason why I decided to include you in this plan, but it's still up to you to show me if you are really worth it or not. You could act in a certain way and I may regard you as useless even though I had an initial need for you, and you may also act in a certain way and I would consider you my most valuable card, despite my initial conception of you. It all bottles down to you in the end. So don't get so worked up thinking about my need for you, I think you should channel your thinking towards how you could make yourself my most valuable card." Joey said with a not-so-happy look.
"You wouldn't blame me, I dont remember what it feels like to have value or worth, it's been ages since l was treated with an ounce of value."
"Well I don't know what you've been told all your life, but the Mandy I knew as a kid knew her worth, she valued herself and considered herself worthwhile, so if this Mandy feels otherwise just because of some bad experience, then I must say l am very disappointed."
Mandy turned to take her to leave, this conversation wasn't helping her.
"Before you go..." Joey said bringing her steps to a stop." I just want to let you
know that, there is no human whom a price tag could be placed on because everyone is priceless." He said.
Mandy turned her neck only halfway, and then she walked out of this study.
"I always thought I was everything ending with less because all my life I've been treated as less of a human, not until today when I got to know that existed a word ending with less, which meant that I could be more," Mandy said to herself as she sat on her dressing table. She raised her head up and stared keenly at the lady in the mirror. "Why don't we work on ourselves, that way we could help Joey achieve his goal," Mandy said to herself with a smile on her face.
A knock fell on her door.
"Coming!" Mandy responded to the knock as she walked towards the door.
"It's you." She said taking a pause between both words.
"I erm...l just wanted to apologize for how I sounded earlier. I realized I was a bit too hard on you. There were nicer ways to say the things I said. I am sorry." He brought out a chocolate bar which he hid behind him.
"Partners?" He asked as she stretched the chocolate bar towards Mandy.
Mandy just looked at him without saying anything or making any move. "Kai!" Joey said in a whisper, turning his face just an inch towards his left. "I thought she said chocolates made ladies happy. Oh, I'm so going give her an earful." He returned his gaze to Mandy wearing a smile.
"Partners!" Mandy said with a smile as she collected the chocolate from him.
"And oh, Kai wasn't lying when she said that, chocolate does make ladies happy."
"You heard that?" Joey asked as he brushed his hand shyly over his head.
"Yh I did. So don't give her an earful." Mandy said still wearing the smile.
"I won't," Joey said wearing an even bigger smile.
They both stood at the door, leaning on the wall of the door at their side.
"So Kai, you both are really close huh!" Mandy said.
Joey couldn't discern if it was a question or a statement.
"I guess you could say that." He noticed the look on Mandy's face. "You don't have to be bothered about it though.
There is nothing going on between us."
He realized the message he had sent across the second after he said what he said. "Uh...l only said that because I felt it could make you uncomfortable working with two lovers. I just didn't want you to act awkward around us, yn, that was why I said that." He said trying to explain himself.
"It's fine. I wouldn't be uncomfortable even though you both were together. I only asked because I noticed how close you both are."
"Oh, I see," Joey said nodding his head.
Mandy just couldn't help but smile watching Joey act all immature and shy as she played with his fingers.
"Seems like you are quite the type who respects love. Have you ever been in love?" Mandy asked out of nowhere.
"Sorry!" Joey said trying to understand where the question came from.
His reaction to the question made Mandy even more enthralled.
"You are cute when you make that reaction."
"Excuse me!" Joey said trying to get Mandy to repeat what she said.
"Never mind. Thank you for this again."
"You are welcome."
"Oh and Joey, I would draft out a plan for our mission."
"Asa! Nice!" Joey said.
"You are a kdrama fan aren't you."
"The walls have ears," Joey said as he placed his hands over Mandy's lips.
"You don't want people calling me a princess do you?" He said with his hands still over her lips.
Mandy chuckled while Joey's hand still
gagged her mouth.
"Okay. I promise I won't say a thing about it when other people are around." Mandy said when Joey finally let go of her mouth.
"Gomawo! I mean thank you!" He said with a smile. "I'm sorry once again."
"It's fine. Thanks again for this." Mandy said as she gestured at the chocolate bar.
"Good evening sir. We found her.
"What! Are you serious? Where is she?
Send me the address immediately!" Jake said excitedly.
"What's the issue?" Tiffany asked.
"Mandy has been found!" He said laughing out really loud.
He picked up his jacket and pecked Tiffany on her lips as he left the house leaving Tiffany to watch the show alone.
"I just sent the address to you." The detective said, calling Jake for the second time.
Jake took the phone away from his ear and then he searched through his message box.
"Yh, l've received it. I'm on my way there right now. I would meet you there." Jake said as he geared his car into motion.
You may have everything within your grasp, but a tiny slip from your side could make it all slip away.
