EPISODE 10
TWO HOURS AGO
"Kali! Kali!" Mrs. Mallory yelled as she walked down the stairs.
"Yes ma'am!" Kali replied coming out from the kitchen.
"Get me some fruits." She said as she sat on the couch.
A few minutes later, Kali returned with some fruits on a plate and a glass of water all on a silver tray.
"Here you go, ma'am." She said as she placed them on a small glass table next to Mrs. Mallory.
"Erm... come back. Kali." Mrs. Mallory called out as she takes a slice of pineapple. "I heard you yelling at someone before I came downstairs and dismissed all of you to your duty posts earlier today after the whole chaos that had happened in the house."
"Oh yes, ma'am," Kali said confirming what Mrs. Mallory had said. "I was actually yelling at Ray."
"Ray?" Mrs. Mallory said trying to get the face of the person. "Who is Ray exactly?" She asked after being unable to remember.
"Ray is the one who mans the gate."
"Oh, Ray!" She said remembering who it was. "So why were you yelling at him? What did he do?"
Mrs. Mallory already had her suspicions that someone saw what happened. She had seen something that looked like the head of someone peeping before she screamed for help but she didn't want to believe it was someone, coupled with the fact that Ray was the first person to come out when she yelled for help makes it even more suspicious to her.
"He didn't do anything ma'am, It was just that when we were all talking he wasn't saying anything and was lost deep in thoughts when everyone was making helpful suggestions."
"Oh, I see!"
"It's nothing serious ma'am," she said noticing the look on Mrs. Mallory's face. "Ray is always like that, that was why l yelled at him, it is just a habit he has," she explained further.
"No, it's fine. I totally get you. You can go now."
Kali gave a bow and turned to take her leave.
"Erm... Get Ray down here for me when you go out." Mrs. Mallory said taking another slice, of watermelon this time.
"Oh no! This mouth of mine!" Kali said slapping herself on the mouth. "I just hope I haven't gotten Ray into trouble. Oh, his sick mother!" Kali cried out.
####PRESENT####
"Young Man, what's the problem?" The detective asked standing up from his seat. He walked towards Ray and placed his hand over Ray's.
"What's the problem? You can talk to me about it. You don't have to be afraid of anything or anyone, l would protect you. You came because you knew you had to say whatever it is you've come to say. Don't back down now. You would be fine."
Just as every other detective, detective Cosmo had a therapeutic ability. A magical way of hypnotizing people with words and getting them to act exactly how you want them to. For a second he got into Ray's head and then he walked him gently back to his seat.
"Now tell me what is you came here for." Detective Cosmo said taking his seat.
Ray opened his mouth to speak, but then he remembers the conversation he had with Mrs. Mallory.
###FLASHBACK####
"Yes ma'am! Kali said you called for me." Ray said as he got to where Mrs. Mallory was.
"Oh! Yes Ray, I did...l did send for you indeed." Mrs. Mallory said taking her eyes off the TV and dropping the fork with a slice of apple in it back in the bowl. "So erm. If you don't mind I would love it if you tell me what's bothering you."
"I'm sorry ma'am," Ray said looking confused. "I don't understand."
"Well, I will tell you then.”
She stood up from the sofa and walked straight to Ray and whispered some words in his ears.
“ Remember your sick mother and make the right choice boy." Mrs. Mallory said as she walked back to her seat.
Ray still stood there unsure if he was to leave or not because she was yet to give him permission to leave.
"Oh, l'm, I'm done with you, you may go back to your duty." She said with a double wave of her left hand.
END OF FLASHBACK
"Young Man, you are free to think about it and come back another day if you're still unsure. I won't force you to make amstatement, you came of your own will after all."
"No. I am going to say what I've come to say."
Detective Cosmo quickly turned on the recorder.
"This is about Mrs. Boss,” noticing the confused look on detective Cosmo's face, “| mean Mrs. Mandy Mallory. I saw it all happen. Someone had knocked on the door and Big Boss, sorry Mrs. Mallory had asked me to go see who it was and it was Miss Tiffany, Boss's mistress, I mean Mr. Jake Mallory's mistress. I was in my house which is close to the gate and I could see the pool from the window at the back. I heard screams and shouts, so I came
out, not like outside but through the window at the back, and then I saw Mrs. Mallory and Miss Tiffany exchanging words and yelling at each other. Mrs. Mallory had hit Tiffany across the face, then Mrs, Mandy came out and tried to stop them because they were close to the pool, and fighting there could be very dangerous. Luckily for her, Mrs. Mallory listened to her and decided to let go, Mrs. Mallory turned her back and was walking
towards the gate, and so did Mrs. Mandy she had turned and was walking back inside the house, Miss Tiffany was standing in the middle. Miss Tiffany had tried to pull Mrs.
Mandy's hair so she could drag her into the pool, but before she could do it, her heels broke and it made her trip, causing her to hit her head hard. on the tiles before she fell into the pool. Mrs. Mallory asked Mrs. Mandy to help pull Tiffany out but she just stood there without moving, I don't know why. | was waiting for Mrs. Mallory to scream for help, but she didn't and I don't think it was because she was tensed just as Mrs. Mandy was, it felt like she deliberately wanted Miss Mandy to drown to death while bleeding, but later on she screamed and that was when I ran in to save her. So the whole thing about Mrs. Mandy being the one who pushed her is nothing but a lie. That was never what happened." Ray was breathing really fast and heavily too. He was unsure about what was going to happen from then on. The detective may be working with them for all he could know.
"Thank you very much, sir." Detective Cosmo said with a smile that was as good as fake. He did not look too happy about what Ray had said. We would call you when we need you some other time.
"Just like that?" Ray asked with a unsatisfied gaze.
"Is there anything else I'm forgetting?" Detective Cosmo asked.
"You don't get it, detective. If I go back there my life and that of my sick mother is in danger. Mrs. Mallory had threatened to kill me if I said anything. You said you would protect me, was that all just a lie, sweet words to get me into talking. There wasn't an ounce of sincerity in that speech you gave me, is there?" Ray couldn't believe it.
"Calm down sir!” Detective Cosmo said walking towards Ray. “| am not going to let anything happen to neither you nor your mother. I am going to handle this. Just go back, don't worry."
Ray felt assured believing everything he had been told, it wasn't like he had any other choice.
"Mr. Jake.," Detective Cosmo said pacing around his office. "I need to see you, as fast as possible."
"That won't be possible detective," Jake said as he walked out of the waiting room, into the hospital garden. "I can't leave where I am. Whatever it is you have to say to me, l am sorry but you have to say it over the phone."
There was silence was some minutes no one was saying anything.
"Hello! Detective! Are you there?" Jake asked breaking the ice.
"It is about your mother."
"My mother! What about her?" Jake asked confused as to what got her involved in the conversation.
"It's either you come to the station as fast as you could, or whenever you feel you could leave where you are, you come to pay your mother a visit in her cell." Detective Cosmo said, with sternness in his voice.
Just then two more doctors rushed into the surgery room looking tensed and perturbed.
The surgery had gone on for too long.
Everyone is almost on the verge of losing hope, Tiffany already lost too much blood, it would only take a miracle to save her. Doctors kept rushing out and rushing in, something was going on, and it wasn't something good. Jake was in a tight corner, it was either his mother or the love of his life.
He had to make a pick between the woman who brought him to life, or the woman with whom he wants to spend the rest of his life.
"The clock is ticking Mr. Jake, you have to make your choice fast, and time is not on your side."
"I... I ..." Jake stuttered.
