                            EPISODE 11

TEN MINUTES AGO

"Detective, this is a serious case!" The Inspector yelled as he threw the files on his table across detective Cosmo's face. "How could you have been so careless? You didn't make investigations; you didn't even ask simple questions, you just went ahead to arrest and detain an innocent victim? A pregnant lady at that! What do you want me to say to the higher-ups when they ask me questions about this?"

"I am really sorry sir; I had received a call from the husband who narrated the whole story to me. If you had been the one whom he called, I'm sure you would have believed him too." Detective Cosmo said trying to buy his way out of his nonchalance.

"What?" The inspector screamed, feeling disgusted by detective Cosmo's excuse. "Do you even hear yourself? Do you realize how stupid you sound right now? Like seriously, if not for the fact that aside our ranking, you are actually a few years older than I am, I would have served you two hard slaps across

your face because the statement you just made deserves it." He said with so much anger on his face.

"I am going to clean up this mess, l promise you sir, I would clean this up."

"Oh yes, you do! What were you thinking? That I was going to clean it up for you? No one else was going to clean it up for you. You have to clean the mess up yourself, so you better figure a way out of this, and fast!"

'"I will sir!"

"You may leave now."

"Yes sir!" Detective Cosmo gave a salute and then he left the office.

#####PRESENT##### 

"You better choose your words wisely sir," Detective Cosmo said interrupting Jake who was stammering really hard.

"I....l erm..." Jake stuttered.

Another nurse walked out, with blood-soaked cotton, while another nurse came running with a drip bag filled with blood. In that short moment when the door opened and closed, Jake managed ta have a peep at Tiffany's face. He gave out a sad smile while tears rolled down his cheeks.

"Mr. Jake, you are wasting my time!" Detective Cosmo said sounding impatient.

"I… I will be there in the next thirty minutes," Jake said breaking down in tears as he ended the call.

At the end of the day, he chose family over love.

He ran out of the hospital with blood shut eyes, his eyes were blood-red from the long sobbing.

"You're here. Have a seat!" Detective Cosmo 

said as he reached for some files on his desk.

"Detective, what is all of this about?"

"Well, I should be asking you that question. What is this you’ve done, Mr. Jake? What stunt did you think you were trying to pull ?" The tone of his voice wasn't sounding very friendly.

"Look detective, I have to be very honest and plain with you right now, I am not in my best mood at the moment, if you have anything to say to me, then please just say it. I don't have the energy to start trying to think hard to understand what you're trying to say. Just be straightforward please," Jake looked drained and tired, this has to be the longest day he had ever had and it did not look like it would be ending anytime soon.

"Well, then I will tell you because even I don't have the time." He turned on the recorder."You told me your wife, Mrs. Mandy Mallory pushed Miss Tiffany into the pool and that you were certain about it, am I right?"

"Yes, yes, you are right."

"Good! You also told me that your mother, Mrs. Mallory was the person who told you about it and that she was present at the scene of the crime?"

'"Yes, I did."

"Okay. You also said your wife and Miss Tiffany don't have the best of relationship, am I correct?"

"Yes you are, I said that too."

"Great! You also..."

"I also said what, detective? I also said what? Jake just wasn't having the best moment, the whole back and forth question and answer got him really pissed and tired. "I told you to just get to the point you are driving at. I don't have the energy for all this."

"Oh please, you won't teach me, my job sir. I also don't have the time for this."

"Perfect! Since we both don't have time why don't we just hit the nail on the head?"

"Your mother lied!"

"Wait, what? What are you talking about detective, how do you mean my mother lied? Why would she do such a thing?"

"I should be asking you that question. Why would your mother lie against her daughter-in-law, more or less, one carrying her grandchild?"

"No no no! You don't know what you are saying. My mother wouldn't do such a thing, she wouldn't stoop so low. Never!"

"Well if you say so, I would let this recording convince you." He said tapping on the recorder for it to play Ray's testimony.

Jake couldn't believe it. He knew his mother hated Mandy and wanted her out of her house and her sight as fast as it could happen, but he never knew his mother would go through the length of wanting her to rot in prison. What even surprises him more is the fact that she also wanted Tiffany dead.

"So what do I do now detective?" Jake asked now a bit more calm, after being convinced that his mother actually lied.

"Well, it is not that serious of a crime, since she didn't kill anyone. She could do one of the three, spend the time required for such an offense in jail, pay a fine, or apologize to the victim."

"Oh, no option three is definitely out of it. My mother would never do that."

"Well I'm sorry to say this to you but she picks it or not, she would still have to do it, because if the victim decides to press charges then it is going to become a serious case. So she has to try to win the victim's heart."

"Oh no! Everything is just a mess."

After few seconds of silence, Jake brought out his phone to call his mom.

"What are you saying, Jake!" Mrs. Mallory screamed over the phone.

"I don't know what else to say or do mom. I don't even want to speak with you right now, because jeez mom you disgust me. Look I don't want to argue with you right now because I don't even have the energy for it, my mind is filled up with a whole lot of other things."

"Jake!"

“Mom,  I've done my best, the rest is up to you. This is your mess; you have to clean it up yourself. This is on you mom. Bye!" Jake said as he hung up.

"Detective I just talked with her. She would make her choice and get to you." Jake said hurrying out of the office.

"I hope she makes the right choice though!" Detective Cosmo screamed after Jake. "I hope he heard me though."

BACK TO THE HOSPITAL 

"Doctor, what is the update? How is she doing?" Jake asked, holding tight onto the doctor's hands.

"Well, I can't promise you anything, sir. This is really unpredictable. Things are getting messier by the second. I know I shouldn't be saying this, but please be prepared for the worse."

Jake couldn't take it anymore. It felt like his airbag was getting tighter, he held on tightly to his chest as he was finding it hard to breathe.

Jake’s phone rang and seeing who it was, he picked the call.

"Hello!" Jake said with no energy in his voice.

"Sir, the investors are here. What do l tell them? They've been waiting for so long and are beginning to lose their patience.

"Reschedule the meeting." He said sounding even weaker this time.

"Huh! Sir, how do l..."

"Just tell them to leave okay! ,”Jake said in a fury. I don't want to receive any calls today, and also cancel every appointment no matter how important it may be." Jake said dropping the phone carelessly on the floor.

SURGERY ROOM

"One! Two! Three! Clear!" The doctor said as he placed the shocker on Tiffany's chest.

"Not responding, doctor!" The nurse said after checking for the heartbeat.

"One! Two! Three! Clear!" The doctor said again and still, there was no response.

"One! Two! Three! Clear!" The doctor said again.

"I can see,it, doctor! I can see the heartbeat!"

"Check for vitals"

"Normal doc!"

"Check for a pulse!"

"Stable doc!"

Everyone in the theatre heaved a sigh of relief.

OUTSIDE THE SURGERY ROOM

The doctor walked out of the operating room, going back to his office.

"What happened doctor?" Jake said almost losing it.

"She is fine. She is back to normal, and everything is stable. She would be moved back to the ward soon and you could see her. This is a very big miracle."

Jake fell to the ground on his knees. He couldn't decide between crying or laughing, so he did both. Tears rolled down his cheeks while laughter resounded from his mouth.

"Someone is here to see you." The cell warden said to Mandy as he opened up her cell.

He walked her into the interrogation room.

"Hey, Mandy." Mrs. Mallory greeted.
